A handy step drill for the most common wire gauges. Calibrated for 20 gauge round wire. Works with a H.30 Foredom Handpiece or the H.20 Quick Change. Let the bit do the work by allowing the drill bit to spin first. Make a quick dent with a hammer and nail and off you go! Hardened tool steel step drill with 3/32" shank and overall length of 1.8" (45mm), .9mm/.0354" head diameter, 8.5 head length or drilling depth.
Jewelers most often use the twist drill bit with a Jacobs-style handpiece, the jaws of which can tighten around the bit's shaft and hold it securely. Step-down bits, however, have a 3⁄32 inch (2.35 millimeter) shaft that’s designed specifically for the quick-release handpiece, which has a collet of a corresponding size. Because of the difference in size between the 3⁄32 shank and the actual bit, care must be taken to ensure that the drilling is straight, or the cutting area of the bit will snap off.
