Probably the most recognized of all the abrasive styles is sandpaper. For jewelry/metalsmithing applications, the most versatile is alumina oxide sandpaper, also known as Wet and Dry. This type of abrasive can be either loaded into a split mandrel of various grades and used to even out scratches on your surface or used by hand. We chose 3M Wet or Dry Sandpaper, because they are simply the best and longest lasting.
There are other sandpaper types, such as garnet sand, a light beige color, which is used for woodworking, not metalworking. The alumina oxide in Wet and Dry paper is ideal for metalsmithing. Utilizing their feature to work while wet, alumina oxide dust particles are greatly reduced and simply makes for a safer product.
With a split mandrel, It is important to note, that in this kind of application, the glue on the sandpaper needs to be broken. By taking a small strip of sandpaper, hold the two ends between your hands and with one side, drag the paper downward, abrasive side up along a sharp 90 degree surface, either your bench or better yet, a steel bench block. This will break the glue backing and the paper will curl in the right direction. With the abrasive facing upward, load one end of the sandpaper into the mandrel. Slowly increase the speed of your flex-shaft until the paper is set into the slot and press it against the surface of your metal.
Use it flat for sanding flat edges with bezels for a perfect soldering fit, or bend it to make a sanding stick.
